When you find a bakery that can concoct cakes that are as pretty as they are delicious, you know you’ve hit the jackpot. And Calavera Cakery in Longview, is just the place couples will win that illustrious gold (made of cream and sugar, of course). Founded by Jennifer Phillips, this boutique bakery focuses on wedding cakes (both bride and groom) and only takes on two weddings per weekend, ensuring that each couple gets one-on-one attention and the dreamiest cakes for their special day.

Jennifer’s formal education is in art, but her love for cake decorating started when she piped icing in Girl Scouts. “Piping bags and tips still remind me of the first time I piped a shell border. I took a Wilton class just for fun and started making cakes for colleagues birthdays at school. I made my first wedding cake on my 45th birthday and haven’t looked back.” Other than that first Wilton beginner class, Jennifer is completely self-taught and enjoys every minute she gets to spend bringing couple’s cake ideas to life.

The process starts with a free consultation, then Jennifer pulls inspiration from the bride’s dress, invitations, color swatches, and Pinterest page. She looks at everything the bride has pinned (not just the cakes) to see what she likes and the overall look of the wedding. Jennifer then designs the cake and makes a sketch, which she sends to the bride and groom for approval. “I love seeing pictures of the bride in her dress when she says ‘yes to the dress.’ The look on her face is priceless and I aim to achieve that same look when she sees her cake sketch for the first time. When that happens, it is fantastic. Working with my brides to make their vision come true is so fulfilling to me.”

Once the sketch is approved, the couple decides on the flavors, which might be the hardest part of all. Cake flavors include scrumptious options like white vanilla almond, German chocolate, and Italian cream. Couples can also choose from frosting flavors like buttercream, salted caramel, and coconut cream cheese. And don’t forget the filling! Jennifer can bake up a cake filled with delectable flavors like raspberry, chocolate truffle, peanut butter, and cream cheese.

“I do everything in my power to make working with Calavera Cakery a fun, interactive, and stress-free process from beginning to end,” Jennifer says. “[Couples] can expect a gorgeous bride’s cake that fits their vision for their special day and/or a groom’s cake that reflects

the groom’s interests, whether it’s a classic cake or a fun, awe inspiring one.” And awe inspiring they are! Just take a look at Calavera Cakery’s photo gallery and you’ll see groom’s designs ranging from classic statue heads to life size deer. And for brides, Jennifer has designed multiple-tiered cakes decorated with edible flowers, ruffles, ribbons, and all kinds of colors and patterns.

Whether it’s a simple buttercream cake or a four-tiered festival of flowers and pearls, if you can dream it, Calavera Cakery can do it. When working with Jennifer, couples can expect professionalism, courtesy, and most definitely a cake that tastes as good as it looks.
