Arch Murphey opened Murphey the Jeweler in downtown Tyler in 1850. As one of the oldest retail establishments in East Texas, Murphey the Jeweler has played an important role in Tyler’s retail history. Not only is it the oldest jewelry store in Texas, but the third oldest in the United States. This family operated business has always offered selections of American and Swiss watches, clocks, diamonds, estate jewelry, and one-of-a-kind pieces that are as unique as the customer who buys the
Future wedded couples will love the beautiful selection of engagement rings and wedding bands (one for every budget). Since Murphey the Jeweler is a small business, they select each piece of jewelry available in the showcases. They only buy one of each style so customers can be sure there will not be another ring just like theirs in the area. They are also proud to be able to offer custom made jewelry as well. They can design a wedding set from start to finish, or if you already have an engagement ring, they can make a matching band to fit perfectly.
Customers can expect to work with experts when they shop at Murphey the Jeweler. Their staff has nearly 100 years of combined experience in the jewelry industry. Their educated and dedicated staff includes an in-store jeweler, an in-store certified watchmaker, two in-store designers, and a certified gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America.
“We love being able to help our customers with repairs and projects that no one else can do.”
“Our jeweler and watchmaker are such experts in their craft that other jewelry stores send people to us for help and other jewelers call us for advice.”
Many people believe that independent jewelry stores are more expensive than chain or “mall” stores and the internet, but for Murphey the Jeweler, this is simply not true. For items of the same quality, they are often comparable to, and sometimes less in price than their competition. This includes the beautiful and ever-changing selection of estate jewelry and the unique pieces that the customers help design. “Since we love to design jewelry, especially for our customers, we do not carry many designer jewelry lines. We prefer to make one-of-a-kind pieces that thousands of other people will not also be wearing. We believe jewelry should be unique and a reflection of the individual who wears it.”
With that being said, the store does offer selections from Parade Designs and Allison Kaufman Jewelry. Both designers are small companies who offer unique and expertly crafted jewelry that can be viewed on Murphey the Jeweler’s website.
“We are often told that we have the most unique jewelry that our customers have seen. This is a great compliment because that is what strive for when picking out new pieces. Our customers tend to be trendsetters.”
“Whether it’s a $10.00 broken watch clasp or a $10,000.00 diamond ring for your sweetheart, Murphey the Jeweler in Times Square Shopping Center is East Texas’ most trusted jeweler.”
